Broken Lizard Troupe of ‘Super Troopers’ and ‘Beer Fest’ perform at The Westcott

The Broken Lizard Comedy Troupe will be visiting the Westcott Theater this Thursday. You may know them better as the guys from the cult hit ‘Super Troopers.’

Breaking away from their traditionally scripted humor in movies, the famous comedy group will be inserting their unique brand of raunchy humor into stand-up comedy.

‘It’s sketch comedy,’ said Eric Binion, a Westcott Theater employee, ‘live group comedy kind of stuff.’

Many students may be familiar with the comedy troupe’s filmography, including ‘Super Troopers’, ‘Club Dread’ and ‘Beerfest’, which has earned the group a strong fan base among young adults. ‘It’s this underground cult comedy kind of thing,’ said Binion. ‘…We’ve sold a lot to college kids. We’ve gotten a lot of Syracuse students.’

Due to the explicit material the group usually incorporates into their movies, including sex, drugs and ‘snozzberries’, the group’s humor can create polarizing opinions.

Jeremy Stoff, an undeclared freshman said he was not an enormous fan of the content found within Broken Lizard humor. ‘I like more subtle humor often times, but I still enjoy it.’

Having both seen and enjoyed ‘Beerfest’ and ‘Super Troopers’, second-year architecture major Brian Luce holds a similar opinion, but is unsure if their humor will translate well into a live stage stand up performance. ‘I haven’t seen any of them live, just in movies. Should be interesting,’ Luce said.

The numbers at Westcott Theatre are telling much different story though. According to owner Dan Mastronardi, the theatre is expecting a full house with only a few hundred tickets left.

Having a famous comedy group visit is a unique event for the Westcott, which usually only deals with musical events. Binion said that Broken Lizard contacted them and asked to do a show at the Westcott. ‘The second we got the offer, we said ‘absolutely’,’ Binion said. ‘…These kinds of events are one of a kind.’

In addition to providing stand up comedy, the core Broken Lizard group will be screening clips from their upcoming film ‘Slammin’ Salmon’ to the audience.

Although not a college student, Mastronardi carries the same excitement and anticipation for the group usually seen in most undergraduates.

‘They’re in really funny movies; some of them are my favorite,’ Mastronardi said.
