Sidewalk, catwalk: College Fashionista bloggers get in front of camera, showcase winter wear

When looking across campus on any given day, students may notice that fashion does not come easily to everyone.

That’s where fashion blog College Fashionista comes in. The site highlights trends on campuses across the country, sending its bloggers out scouting for stylish students to photograph.

The blog’s founder, Amy Levin, graduate of Indiana University, is a self-titled minimalist who favors fashion that can function in a variety of ways. Her go-to wardrobe piece is a simple T-shirt, which can be worn in a classroom setting or to go out for the night, she pointed out.

Levin said that while it is important to draw inspiration from high fashion, it is equally important to stay in your comfort zone.

‘Be true to yourself,’ Levin advised.

The College Fashionista blog is broken up into chapters dedicated to different schools. Julie Kosin, a sophomore magazine journalism major and biweekly fashion columnist for The Daily Orange, is in charge of the Syracuse University chapter.

Kosin said her secret to style is always to keep things changing. She is inspired by all fashion around her, be it someone walking across campus or something she sees in a magazine.

‘I’m always changing everything up,’ she said. ‘I’ll have a new bag or a different pair of shoes on every day. Right now, I’m very into bright lipstick.’

So who are the fashionistas behind this blog, and what are they wearing?

Kosin heads a team of bloggers at SU, including Sarah Kinslow and Brittany Fowler, who stepped out behind the camera to strut their stuff and share their personal styles.

‘I live in the cold climates of Syracuse and the Adirondacks for most of the year, so I show off a lot of my style through jackets, scarves, boots and hats.  I have a classic and simple style, but with an outdoorsy preppy twist. My go-to stores are J.Crew, Urban Outfitters and Rugby Ralph Lauren. I always go for comfortable and functional clothes and pair them with simple classic accessories.’

‘My personal style changes on a day-to-day basis. I love slipping on a little black dress with a pair of stilettos just as much as I enjoy pairing a plain white tee with a pair of skinny jeans and flats. However, one aspect that remains constant is my love for accessories. From chunky knit scarves to a bold piece of jewelry, accessories complete every outfit I wear. Overall, I’d say my look is casual chic with a feminine touch.’
