Police arrest, charge man for porch fire

Police have arrested a man in connection to a fire set on the porch of a Syracuse University student’s apartment last weekend.

Grigoriy Bagiryan, 19, of Solvay, N.Y., was charged with arson in the second degree and reckless endangerment in the first degree — both felonies, said Sgt. Gary Bulinski of the Syracuse Police Department.

Last Saturday, an SU student was walking into his apartment on the 800 block of Ackerman Avenue with a few friends when three men tried to enter with them.

When the student didn’t let them inside, the men started to throw bottles at the apartment.

One of the men threw a lit gas can on the second-floor porch of the apartment, starting a fire. The student tossed the can off the porch and put out the fire.

Bulinski said SPD is still investigating the fire. No other arrests have been made.
