Guard Butler transfers to James Madison from Syracuse
Rising sophomore guard Tasia Butler has transferred from Syracuse to James Madison, JMU Athletics announced Thursday.
Butler leaves the Orange — as well as her older sister, Tiara, a rising redshirt-senior — after one year, and will sit out the upcoming season due to NCAA regulations. She will then have three years of eligibility with the Dukes.
In her one season at Syracuse, the 6-foot-1 Butler appeared in 16 games. She averaged 5.3 minutes per game and less than one point, as she struggled to crack head coach Quentin Hillsman’s guard-heavy rotation.
With all but three of SU’s 11 guards from this past season returning next year — and another guard in the incoming class — Butler would have faced the same challenge in 2014-15.
Butler’s transfer moves her closer to home in Waldorf, Md., where she was a four-star recruit in high school before committing to Syracuse.
