Syracuse University announced it will build a hotel on University Avenue in a Tuesday afternoon news release, with a plan to open its doors by fall 2027.
SU is planning to construct a roughly 200-room, full-service hotel with an accompanying restaurant and event space, according to the release. The hotel would be built at the corner of University Avenue and Harrison Street, across from the University Avenue Garage.
“While we are in the early stages of this process, we are confident a new hotel will not only serve our campus community well, it will also further strengthen the University’s role as a vibrant and integral part of the City of Syracuse and Onondaga County,” Brett Padgett, SU’s senior vice president and chief financial officer, said in the release.
The university’s effort follows the recent conversion of the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center to Orange Hall, which now houses second-year students. Padgett also said there’s a “significant need” for an additional hotel near campus.
University leaders are in the process of negotiating with hotel brands and intend to partner with a company that will “meet the needs and expectations” of SU. They are collaborating with Onondaga County leadership to ensure the hotel also provides for the city of Syracuse.
When SU selects a brand partner, it will proceed with the design, development and permitting phases, according to the release.
